Gray Cloudy Water

Chlorine Demand
Occasionally, traditional chlorination methods are not effective because of contaminants within the pool water. The pool owner may not be able to achieve a chlorine reading while using the same chlorination dosage as usual. This creates what is known as 'Chlorine Demand'.
High levels (>100ppm) of cyanuric acid (typically used as a stabilizer or conditioner) can be one of the culprits. Elevated cyanuric acid slows down the effectiveness of chlorine to control algae and other contaminants. Cyanuric acid is not the only culprit. Other causes may be live adn/or dead algae, organics, ammonia, nitrates, phosphates, combined chlorine (chloramines) and certain carbonates. We suggest E-Z POOL® to remedy this.

Treatment Protocol

  • Balance water and clean/backwash filter.
  • Add ten scoops (5lb) of E-Z POOL® and 16oz of Revive!® for every 10,000 gallons of pool water. Let the pool circulate 24-48 hours without swimming.
  • After 48 hours, clean/backwash filter again, recheck balance and adjust if necessary, add typical chlorine dosages. Check chlorine readings in 24 hours.
  • Repeat process if necessary.
  • Resume normal pool maintenance or begin on the E-Z POOL® or PEPPER® program.

Notes:

  • Prior to starting any chlorine demand treatment, test pool for nitrates. If they are >20ppm, draining the pool is recommended.
  • Cyanuric acid recommended levels are typically <60ppm. The higher above this level, the harder it is to keep water balanced, even after finishing this treatment. Anything >100ppm, first consider replacing pool water.

Grey, Cloudy, Murky Water
There are many reasons for cloudy pool water. Unbalanced or untreated water, excessive organics, algae outbreak, inefficient filtration, poor circulation, metals or carbonates, are a few. Pools properly maintained on E-Z Pool do not have these problems.

Did you know...The 24 Hour Pool Fix (pg 16) can clear a cloudy, murky pool?

The key to clear water can be found in the "3 C's": chemicals, circulation, and clean filter. The following treatments are designed to fix comon issues associated with cloudiness in pools that have proper working equipment and circulation.",
"For a large majority or pools, cloudiness can be a combination of the following: a high pH, stagnant pool water, large lagae outbreaks, untreated fill water, high bather load, high chlorine demand, or non-sanitized water.

Treatment Protocol
Occasionally, pools can develop enough contaminates that traditional means of cleaning or clearing the pool do not seem to work. These pools are sometimes referred to by consumers as 'milk' or 'gray' pools.

24-Hour Pool Fix

  • Balance Water. Note: If pool is green, double-shock accordingly.
  • Add 5 scoops (2.5lb) of E-Z POOL® per 10,000 gallons of water around the perimeter of the pool.
  • Run pump for 30 minutes while brushing the walls of the pool.
  • Turn off pump.
  • Spray 32oz Revive per 10,000 gallons of water over pool surface.
  • Once debris has settled, vacuum pool (typically 24-48 hours later).
  • Repeat if necessary.
  • Resume normal pool maintenance or begin on the E-Z POOL® or PEPPER® program.

Treating Algae

Algae Pools
Algae outbreaks can form in pools because of improper balance and sanitization, high phosphate levels, bather loads, and weather. Pools treated with E-Z POOL® have No Algae Guaranteed!. For pools not treated with E-Z POOL®, there are many ways to treat for algae. It is important to note that phosphates are algae food and when those levels reach 500ppb or higher, the pool should be treated.

Treatment Protocol

Mustard Algae
Brush pool surface and treat with a sodium bromide-based algaecide/chlorine enhancer along with chlorinated shock, follow product label instructions during treatment. Be sure that everything that has come into contact with the pool is clean and sanitized.

Green Algae
Brush pool surface and treat with chlorinated shock. Dosage should be determined by severity of issue. Supplement with a copper-based algaecide and follow the product directions the day following chlorine treatment. See Treatment Protocol for Green Cloudy Pools

Black Algae
Treat with a stain & scale product, brush algae spots, then dose with triple chelated copper-based algaecide, typically know as an "extended life" algaecide. Follow the label directions and repeat if necessary.

  • Black Algae - characterized by small round lumps of black and typically found in plastered pools.
  • Black Stains - when these stains appear under a liner, they may be misconstrued as algae when it is really a mold that forms due to groundwater under a vinyl liner.

After Algae Treatment

  • After algae has been treated, turn off circulation system.
  • Spray up to 64oz of Revive START UP/CLEAN UP per 24,000 gallons of pool water over pool surface, depending on the severity of the initial algae issue.
  • Keep pool pump turned off for 24-48 hours. As time passes, debris will form on the flow of the pools and the pool water will gradually clear at the same time
  • Once the water is clear, vacuum the debris through the waste portal on the valve of the sand or DE filter. On cartridge filter pools, vacuum the debris to the filter then clean the cartridge element.
  • Resume normal pool maintenance or begin on the E-Z POOL® or PEPPER® program.

  • "Just wanted to thank you for a great product. After four weeks of trying several different products and also adding way to much chlorine, we can finally see the bottom of our pool. Added Revive!® at 6PM last night, by the time we went to bed, we could notice a difference and when I got up this morning everything had settled to the bottom. Used the vacuum for about an hour this morning and were swimming this afternoon. Will probably have to vacuum once more, but so glad this product was recommended to us."

  • "Easy, simple, worry free…these all describe how my pool maintenance has been since I started using EZ POOL! I have a big pool and it is not a big job with E-Z POOL®, just once a week. Once the pool is open and clear in the spring, I just have Caryl’s experts test my pool sample once a week to make sure the balancing chemicals and pH are good. Algaecides are not needed. Brush, brush, brush, as Caryl recommends and my pool is beautiful all summer! Also, it is gentle to the skin and does not effect your hair color. I highly recommend E-Z POOL®!"

  • “I have used the EZ Spa® now for four years. It is the best spa treatment I have ever used. It makes the water feel really soft and refreshing. I use it once a week and forget it. My spa stays crystal clear. I love this stuff. Not to mention when you use EZ Spa® you don’t have to buy so many other chemicals. I also noticed that EZ Spa® is extremely gentle on the skin. I can’t say enough about how good this stuff is. Try it, you’ll love it!”
